The Songs Of Our People
Anurag Banerjee’s photobook documents the vibrant but isolated music scene in Meghalaya — one of the seven states (or ‘seven sisters’) that forms the North East of India — which has historically been politically and culturally marginalised by the Indian mainstream culture. Anurag’s project, which features sprawling portraits and interviews of key musicians, seemed to us like evidence: that such a scene exists, that great art is being created despite the cultural isolation from the mainland. The cover needed to reflect this magnitude — a design that feels etched in the pages of history.
We created a custom alphabet, influenced by the Trajan column and Jan van Krimpen’s Open Kapitalen, to typeset the cover (and ‘identity’ of the project). The outlined type was created as such, drawing the margins, so to speak. The letters are pressed into a linen cloth-bound hardcover to evoke a timeless quality, as though the book has always existed. We also created a pull-out poster (referencing the 90s and 2000s music magazines we grew up on) featuring our favourite photograph from the book.
