Journal of the Indian Institute of Architects
We were commissioned by the Indian Institute of Architecture (IIA) to redesign their monthly magazine, JIIA. The journal contains dry, academic content: research papers, proposals, and theoretical articles. We chose to embrace the dryness and created a robust identity system that maintains consistency without veering into monotony.
The new design uses Antique Olive as the foundation layer of the new typographic system, which includes Anselm Serif for text and FF Balance for captions and small texts — typefaces that exude a tension between functionality and asymmetry. The identifiable elements were established first, then broken, skewed, and re-interpreted in various ways depending on the content. The typefaces adopt architectural forms in the layouts, aided by the visible grid structure mimicking architectural drawings and plans.
