Graphik Devanagari
Commercial Type commissioned November to create the Indic companion to Christian Schwartz’s influential Graphik. Designed by Hitesh “Rocky” Malaviya, Graphik Devanagari is an attempt at creating the “perfect” default monolinear Devanagari typeface. The family was designed to be a Devanagari equivalent rather than a simple collection of repeated shapes. Graphik Latin has a characteristic warmth while maintaining a good degree of neutrality, which is achieved in the Devanagari through Rocky's deft handling of weight distribution and interpretation of key characteristics.
Graphik Devanagari was an exercise in optical correction: because the Devanagari script has complex shapes and much less white space than Latin, equal treatments often make the former appear darker. This was corrected by careful adjustments in weight, terminals, and counters, creating an equal, warm texture between the two scripts.
Graphik Devanagari is part of the larger Graphik Indic project that includes Graphik Tamil and Graphik Bangla.
