Graphik Tamil
Commercial Type commissioned November to create the Indic companion to Christian Schwartz’s influential Graphik. Designed by Hitesh “Rocky” Malaviya, Graphik Tamil is an attempt at creating the “perfect” default monolinear Tamil typeface. The family was designed to be a Tamil equivalent rather than a simple collection of repeated shapes. Tamil presents a unique challenge among the Indic canon: its letterforms vary widely in horizontal width and are noticeably less dense than even Latin (while most North Indian scripts are denser). Tamil also features characteristic loops, ascenders and descenders, the pulli (dot diacritic), and open counters.
As with Devanagari, the Tamil design was an exercise in weight distribution and optical correction. We also designed a Tamil-specific space unit that reverts back to the original when used with the Latin glyph set.
Graphik Tamil is part of the larger Graphik Indic project that includes Graphik Devanagari and Graphik Bangla.
